They fell from the world above, tumbling down into a subterranean realm — brilliant and viscous. People surrendering to desire dressed themselves in lavish garments, twisted their faces into expressions of ecstasy, waiting to attend a party at the end of the century. I joined the crowd pressing forward in the queue. Everyone believed they had been invited. No one held a ticket in their hand.
