B.OOM 2019

In 2019, marking the 5th anniversary of B.DANCE, the 2nd edition of B.OOM by B.DANCE— an international award-winning showcase — made its grand appearance at the Taipei Wellspring Theater, in Taiwan and in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Initiated by Artistic Director Tsai, Po-Cheng, the project's core vision is to build a platform where creativity interweaves and imagination knows no bounds. By bringing together independent choreographers and dancers celebrated at major international choreography competitions and festivals, the program fulfills its curatorial promise of offering audiences multiple award-winning works in a single evening. Professional dance workshops were also held throughout the event, forging meaningful connections between Taiwan's younger generation and the international dance community.

Artistic Director Tsai, Po-Cheng noted that the series was founded to bring exceptional artists together in organic dialogue, and to encourage the younger generation to engage actively — whether through watching, learning, or exchanging ideas — to broaden their horizons and unlock unlimited possibilities for the future.

**Program & Artist Lineup**

This edition brought together leading artists from 6 countries — Italy, Portugal, Vietnam, Spain, Luxembourg, and Taiwan — delivering 70 minutes of uninterrupted, high-energy performances. Each work radiates the distinct cultural imprint of its creator, showcasing exceptional artistic expression:

***What Happened in Torino*** | Choreographer: Andrea Costanzo Martini (Italy)
A former company dancer with Batsheva Dance Company in Israel and Cullberg Ballet in Stockholm, Martini presents a refined solo that challenges the limits of mental and physical states. The work received the Gold Award at the International Solo-Tanz-Theater Festival Stuttgart in Germany.

***...ERAN CASI LAS DOS*** | Choreographers: Miguel Zomas Ballabriga & Carmen Fumero Alfonso (Spain)
A duet that has graced the stage of the renowned Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in the United States, this work seamlessly blends breaking dance floorwork with virtuosic partnering technique, weaving a romantic pas de deux.

***Zement, the solo*** | Choreographer: Jill Crovisier (Luxembourg)
Recipient of the Lëtzebuerger Danzpräis (Luxembourg Dance Prize) for female choreographers and a former guest choreographer for B.DANCE, Crovisier is a long-standing advocate for international humanitarian issues. Drawing on African dance, street dance, and Chinese classical dance, this work serves as a metaphor for the social realities of separation and destruction.

***Trial*** | Choreographer: Tu Hoang (Vietnam)
Vietnam-born, Netherlands-based choreographer Tu Hoang brings a movement language deeply rooted in Tai Chi and martial arts, balanced with classical ballet training. The work took Gold at the MASDANZA International Challenge in 2018 and placed Third at the Copenhagen International Choreography Competition in Denmark.

***NERVURE*** | Choreographer: Liliana Barros (Portugal)
Portugal-born artist Liliana Barros, currently based in Germany and serving as guest choreographer for the Ballett des Saarländisches Staatstheater, presents a solo of striking social urgency. The work offers a profound exploration of the clown figure's aching, restless longing within life's contradictions.

***Orthrus*** | Choreographer: Tsai, Po-Cheng (Taiwan)
Named by the influential German dance magazine *Tanz* as one of the most promising young dancers of the year, Tsai, Po-Cheng presents a new duet inspired by Orthrus — the twin-headed hound of Greek mythology who guards the gates of the underworld. Performers Chang Chien-Chih and Chang Sheng-Ho bring the work to life with remarkable chemistry and nuanced physical expression.

Cai Bocheng

Taiwan

Artist Info

Tsai Po-Cheng is a choreographer and full-time dance teacher, currently serving as the Artistic Director of B.DANCE, the production team behind Chengwu Dance Studio. He has been creating continuously since his student days, incorporating his own life experiences and insights into his works. His pieces are emotional yet humorous, with a unique vocabulary that blends theatrical art, dance, and extreme physical movements, resulting in a diverse style. His duets, including "Floating Flowers," "Hugin/Munun," and "INNERMOST," have won numerous awards both domestically and internationally.

Concept of work

Inspired by the two-headed hound that guards the gates of Hell in Greek mythology, the two-headed dog, with its two heads and one body, is "usually used in mythology to guard a specific area or protect something. This image reminds me that everything has good and evil, and even more aspects. On the other hand, good and evil are not opposites; often they coexist." In his dance work, Tsai Po-cheng arranges for dancers to imitate the fierce image of the two-headed dog, representing the pulling state of two heads with different thoughts sharing a single body, thus reflecting the multifaceted nature of humanity. Tsai Po-cheng says, "The good or bad of things comes from interpretation. What is good for one person may be bad for another. It depends on one's thoughts and perspectives, leading to different results."

Concept of work

Concept of work

This solo dance, *Zement*, is a work by young choreographer Jill Croweschl, primarily based on the concept of separation and the imagery of a concrete wall. Human hands, besides being used to execute various political decisions, are also a mirror reflecting the life of the person who owns those hands.

Andrea Costanzo Martini

Italy

Artist Info

Andrea Costanzo Martini was born in Italy, where he studied modern dance and ballet.

At the age of 19, he moved to Munich, Germany, and studied at the Heinz-Bosl Stiftung Ballet Academy.

In 2004, he joined the Aalto Ballett Theter Essen in Germany, beginning his professional ballet career.

Andrea joined the Basilva Dance Company's second company in 2006 and joined the main company two years later.

During his time with the Basilva Dance Company, Andrea participated in all of Ohana Harin and Sharon Yil's works, and through the company's "Dancer Creation" workshops, became a gaga dance technique teacher and also created choreography.

Andrea subsequently joined the Carl Berg Ballet in Stockholm, where he worked for two years on the works of numerous choreographers, including Benoît Lassambe, Alexander Eckermann, Christophe Petter, Jeff Tavantint, and Tilman O'Donnell.

Andrea won the Gold Medal for Choreography and Performance at the 2013 Stuttgart International Solo Dance Festival in Germany for his work "What Happened in Dorino?" In 2015, the work won the Audience Choice Award at the Masdanza International Choreography Competition in Spain.

In December 2016, Andrea's work "Blue Eyes" won the Second Jury Prize at the Jerusalem International Choreography Competition.

In November 2018, Andrea was selected for the European Young Choreographers Platform with her work "Scarab, Horns and Void".

Concept of work

Solo creation by Andrea Costanzo Martini.

What would it be like if every cell in my body were thoroughly examined by the other objects in the room?

What does it mean to "expose oneself"?

Is it an act of selflessness or selfishness?

More broadly, can we develop meaning from physical actions?

These are questions I pondered while creating "What Happened in Dorino?"

The challenge for me in this dance was to release the deepest power of the body; it might involve bizarre or exaggerated physical movements, but it must absolutely break free from conventional frameworks.

Even so, while releasing primal energy, I must also objectively and calmly evaluate the execution of all the movements and details I create.

This is a back-and-forth struggle between mental state and physical expression. In the performance, I obeyed my own rules, but at the same time, I rebelled against them, because I wanted to simultaneously present the state of the viewer and the viewed.

The narration accompanying the dance is taken from the words of Italian teleshopping expert Vina Massi while selling products; she became a household name in the 1990s for her innovative sales methods and energetic personality.

This dance piece won the Gold Medal for Choreography and Performance at the Stuttgart International Solo Dance Festival in Germany in March 2013.
