B.link No.9|Where Distance Resonates

::Remarks by Director ::

In August, we let the web sink beneath the surface. There was little sound, and no urgency to force anything into being. The work that had yet to be seen continued quietly in the rhythm of everyday life, each thread slowly finding its way back to a more precise position.

As September arrived, we began to hear something in return. The sound came from afar.

At the beginning of the month, B.DANCE brought Floating Flowers to Glasgow, UK, and took the stage at Ballet Nights. When a work that began in Taiwan once again leaves its familiar cultural and viewing context, it begins to have a journey of its own. Different cities and different audiences allow the same work to generate new understandings and responses. After the performance, Glasgow Theatre Blog described Floating Flowers as “the most avant-garde sequence of the night,” and characterized the viewing experience it created as “confusing, amusing and compelling.”

This response matters not because it defines the work, but because it allows us to see once again that when a work travels far enough, it no longer belongs only to its creator.

Some see unfamiliarity within it. Some sense humor. Some are drawn to a bodily state that is difficult to put into words. Each act of viewing gives the work another possible form of existence. And these voices returning from afar have quietly become part of the direction that carries us forward. At the end of September, B.DANCE will set out once again for the United Kingdom.

Floating Flowers will continue on to Leeds and Darlington. The journey that began in Glasgow will extend into different cities, allowing the work to encounter new audiences.

Looking back on this year, we have been speaking about a “web.” From the first single thread to the gradual formation of nodes; from becoming entangled with one another to sinking into invisible depths. But perhaps what truly matters about a web has never been only how many places it connects. Rather, it is that when one end begins to tremble, someone far, far away at the other end is able to feel it.

In September, we began to hear these echoes. Some came from places we had already reached, while others came from journeys not yet begun. Distance did not make us more remote from one another. Instead, it allowed those subtle vibrations to become possible to hear.

From afar, there is sound.

And we are still on the road.
